Winter Field Day 2023 Recap #1

Winter Field Day was Awesome! The weather was perfect for the event. While it was super cold in the morning, by 11am it was pretty nice and it stayed that way all day.

HF was good and K6CED’s wire antenna setup was quite impressive. KN6SOJ was there with his Hustler. I had 15 meters set up on my van. KN6SOG had his 40 meter dipole. We Had 2 stations on FT8, and 3 on phone. N6CG was working HF. My station worked 15 meters and made 15 contacts. Lots of onlookers both members and visitors. KN6UNL was there with his QRP rig. It was so sensitive and had great sound. I gave him my QRP wire antenna and he got it set up in a few minutes. Before I even got there KN6SOG reported that he had contacted Indonesia on 40M. That’s almost 9,000 miles! Really something for 40 meters. I made a FT8 contact in Spain on 15 Meters. I also made a Phone contact in New Jersey on 15 meters. I still need logs from KN6SOJ & K6CED but they were making contacts as well. We worked mostly 15, 20, 30 & 40 meters.

3 people came by for testing and passed (One passed tech and general). Food was great! The Taco’s were amazing! KN6SOG generously donated tortillas and taco meat (carne asada & chicken) and AI6ZW donated condiments and did the cooking. It was truly exceptional! What really made the day special was how everyone came together to make the whole thing go so smoothly. I was in aah of our teamwork, and the ease at which things happened. I think most of us learned a few things about our great hobby, and I saw a lot of smiling faces.
Thank you all!

That said. There have been a few observations as to how things could have been done better on field day. Notably Protocol and Safety. I have made a few myself. Changes are already in the works to make this years Summer Field the best ever. We welcome ANY & ALL constructive and well intention-ed feedback. Please keep it coming. We’re all learning, and we do it better, and have more fun as a group. Use the feedback link in this weeks announcement or go to our website contact page.
